In 1974 Loyola athletic director ED ENOS organized a sports
study group to MOSCOW. I was selected to lead the hockey section
which included coaches
from pro, junior
and universities in CANADA and the UNITED STATES. We spent
3weeks in MOSCOW attending
daily lectures at THE MOSCOW INSTITUTE OF SPORT from the
top RUSSIAN coaches. It was a great experience for a young coach
and I'll always remember FRED SHERO telling stories about the
antics of fellow islander FORBES KENNEDY, being followed around
the city by the KGB and the RUSSIANS
calling out the name ESPOSITO when they learned we were CANADIANS. Certainly
the 72 CANADA -RUSSIA SERIES was one of the most important
hockey events ever and this clinic in MOSCOW helped a lot of
coaches improve their technical skills.
